3D Printing

3D Printing

In this session I have learnt how to 3D print an item out of scratch using Fusion 360. We were given instructions to create an item that cannot be made subtractively (can be cut or carved out). Such examples are a whistle and a ball in a box.

During this experience I have encountered numerous issues such as the difficulty to create my design in Fusion 360 as I am not really experienced in using all the functions included and I have made an object that could have been made subtractively which was a Pokeball. Here is the model of my Pokeball.

I have only realised my mistake at the workshop and then decided to add hinges so that the Pokeball is able to open and close. After that procedure I faced another problem as it needed a support since it was a sphere. I was really clueless and had little guidance. Hence I have decided to create a new design and come back to the workshop another day.

Heart Shape Box

I came out with a simple yet appealing model of a heart shape box as it is also a functional product. Here is the procedure of creating the heart shape box in Fusion 360.

Firstly, I made a sketch of a heart shape and used the mirror function to create two identical hearts to be the base and the lid of the box. Next, I added and axis line as it allows me to see how the box would look like when it is closed and opened as I want it to print in an open position for an easier process. Next, I added a circle sketch aligned it to the axis and extruded it to create the first part of the hinge and mirrored it.

I used the mirror function to mirror the hinge and create a complete hinge between the lid and the base.

Next, I focused on the hinge part to create a functional hinge that can rotate. In order to do this, I had to make a spacing on both the lid and base to place the hinge to move without obstruction. By doing so, I selected the face and extruded under the "cut" option.

Here are the results above after extruding without the view of the hinge.

After making the hinge appear, I sketched a hole in each hinge and cut through 2mm with an angle of 45 degrees while the opposite part extruding it outwards into the hole that I have just created with the same dimensions and angle. The hinge is now fully functional. The pictures above show how it looks like when being opened and closed using the rotate function and the axis that we have created earlier.

For appearance, I have changed the material to plastic and added red to make it look more appealing as my model. This is finally ready to be 3D printed. However, I had no choice but to scale the size down in order to print within the given timing of 1 hour which had affected the flexibility of the hinges.

Steps to 3D Print

To 3D print, I saved the file and exported to STL file and opened the file on Cura to make any amendments such as the infill and converted it to g-code to make it readable by the 3D printer. I transferred the file to a micro SD chip to be inserted to the 3D printer. The 3D printer has to be preheated before commencing the printing process.

This is the final result of my 3D printed product!
